Process of SMC Compression Molds

smc compression molding by SMC Compression Molds

Sheet molding compound is transformed into finished parts through a processing technique called compression molding. These compression techniques ensure part consistency within precise tolerances. Place the pre-weighed material into a matching large press. Tools are heated tp 140-165°C, depending on recipe and other factors. The hydraulic plunger then compresses the material at a pressure of about 100 bar over the projected area. The combination of heat and pressure softens the SMC/BMC and forces the material to flow through the entire cavity.

The curing agent in the compound is stable at room temperature but is activated by the heat of the mold. Cure time depends on the type of resin in the matrix, the level of curing agent and the thickness of the component. Thick parts take longer to complete the heat pass and can create excessive exothermic temperatures, which is why mold temperatures are generally lower and molding cycles for thicker parts are longer. Therefore, mold cycle time depends on the size, thickness and complexity of the part, but a typical compression molding cycle will be less than two minutes. When the cycle is complete, the tool is turned on and the part is removed, ready for finishing operations such as deburring, machining and painting.
